The Society has recently got involved with the plight of Asylum Seekers who have arrived in Northern Ireland. They have been forced to flee their homelands through persecution and threat of death.
In most cases they arrive here believing they are in England. They are kept in hostels and then transferred to houses or flats. Social Services give them food vouchers but very little money to purchase the normal necessities to live on.
The Society works closely with the NI council for Ethnic Minorites (NICEM) offering Asylum seekers support such as short-term voluntary opportunities at our regional furniture store and other outlets in Belfast.
Here they can carry out some voluntary work for community benefit whilst awaiting refugee status.
