Annual "Giving Tree" opens in Your M&S Belfast to help disadvantaged children at Christmas.

The 'Giving Tree' appeal has been run by ourselves and Belfast Central Mission for the last seven years and is supported by Marks & Spencer.

It provides an opportunity for members of the public to buy toys for children who are in need and eases the burden for many families who are facing financial difficulties or family breakdown.

The toys generated through the Giving Tree are distributed to children in need from all communities.

Last year the generosity of the public in Belfast provided 1,250 gifts for needy children. Speaking at today's launch SVP Regional Administrator Aileen Coney said:-

"We are asking members of the public to act like real-life Santas and donate new toys. Unfortunately there are many who dread this season, but a small gift will help brighten a child's Christmas and show that someone cares. SVP and BCM work together across the community and we try to bring a little of the real meaning of Christmas to these homes".

The Society of St Vincent de Paul and Belfast Central Mission have recently celebrated working together for 25 years. The Giving Tree is one of our most important projects as it goes right into the heart of the Christmas spirit, bringing happiness to children, and demonstrates our mutual ethos of "need before creed".
