Edmund Rice Awards 2006

<<<previous : next>>>

Young Vincentian gives presentation on work of Society of St Vincent de Paul at recent Edmund Rice Award ceremony in Belfast.

Steven Kelly, President of the newly formed SVP Youth conference at Edmund Rice College in Glengormley, spoke about the work and fundraising that the SVP Youth group had already initiated during his presentation in the Wellington Park Hotel on Monday 8th May 2006.

Steven used an array of photos from the school’s SVP work and demonstrated clearly of what SVP stood for in community terms, and the huge impact that it ultimately had on the individual who benefited.

Simultaneously, Steven was able to draw great parallels between the work of Edmund Rice and Frederic Ozanam. Steven outlined how the SVP Youth members at Edmund Rice College hoped to continue the work in the spirit of Edmund Rice by reaching out to others within their community.

Having witnessed the way in which Steven and his peers approached the presentation and have carried out their SVP work to date, it is clear that the SVP group at Edmund Rice College will grow in confidence and numbers in the future.

Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers’ Schools in Ireland is remembered each year in the form of regional award ceremonies. Each school connected with Edmund Rice or CBS is invited to come along and to present how, they, as a school have helped to keep the spirit of Edmund Rice alive in their school community through the participation of voluntary work or projects.

This year presentations came from 11 different schools including Edmund Rice College in Glengormley and St Paul’s Bessbrook.

The presentations covered a wide range of work carried out by the schools including Romanian Aid, Zambia, Community Outreach Programmes and St Vincent de Paul work.

The guest speakers this year were Tyrone Manager Mickey Harte, who spoke with great passion about the ability to and the skill of listening, he also placed great emphasis upon the important role that Youth have in the future. Mickey highlighted that the younger generation each have a role and a value, as “God doesn’t create rejects”. Brother Tim Monghan also spoke about the importance of reaching out to others and not to be fooled into thinking that need only exists in far off lands. Brother Tim rounded off, by stating that there is “…more joy in giving than receiving.”
