Conor was able to demonstrate the most effective and acceptable ways of communicating with someone suffering from hearing loss. Also, how to provide assistance for a person with hearing loss in various situations eg in SVP shops, in job interviews, in emergencies.

Workshops raise issues facing Deaf people and Travelling Community

On 22nd September 2005 the Society was pleased to welcome Conor Mervyn of R.N.I.D. to the Antrim Rd offices where he conducted a very interesting and informative training session on deaf awareness.

He emphasised the importance of understanding the deaf person's point of view, particularly in the light of the ongoing changes to the Disability Discrimination Act.

The session was very worthwhile and enjoyable, and everyone agreed they had learnt something new - including how to introduce themselves in sign language!

"An Munia Tober" - (The Good Road) - a local traveller support group, was invited to give a presentation.

Mark Donohue, from the group, gave a very informative talk on all aspects of traveller culture - the origins, customs, family structures and day to day lifestyle of the travelling communities. He also gave details of the type of prejudices and problems faced by the travellers, and the effects of those on the younger people in the community.

There was opportunity given to everyone attending to comment and ask questions, which led to an open discussion of a variety of issues relating to travellers, both positive and negative.

Mark was able to reply to the concerns some had about instances of anti-social behaviour by some travellers, and to assure those worried that, as in any community, there is a small number of people who will spoil things for the others, but that the majority of travellers respect other peoples traditions and way of life.

It was an interesting and lively session.
