A village near the coast of Sumatra lies in ruin after the tsunami swept through and devastated the area, in Indonesia.

The earthquake, measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, occurred in the ocean bed off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, resulting in a massive tidal wave which had a devastating effect on the surrounding countries including Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh causing, to date, almost 300,000 deaths.

€100k has already been sent to local SVP branches in the area from our Disaster Relief Fund in Dublin and local conferences in Northern Ireland have so far raised £182k (€252k) during January and February 2005.
