Five local charities - Society of St Vincent de Paul, Ulster Cancer Foundation, Meningitis Research Foundation, Chest Heart & Stroke Association and Children in Need - were guests at the reception to receive their cheques.

The donations arise from a gala performance by the legendary Placido Domingo promoted in association with the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of Ireland at the Point Theatre in Dublin on 9th March 2005 in aid of 10 Irish Charities.

Donations of the same amounts were made to five southern-based charities at a ceremony held in Dublin last week.

The Grand Lodge of Freemasons in Ireland kindly donated €5,000 (£3,330) to the Society at a reception in the Provincial Masonic Hall, Rosemary Street, Belfast on Friday 30th September 2005.

Pictured at the presentation ceremony are:- (L-R) Deputy Grand Master, George Dunlop, Grand Master, Eric Waller, Aileen Coney, SVP Regional Administrator and Deputy Provincial Grand Master, John Dunlop

Mr Waller said: "The concert successfully served its dual purpose of raising the social profile of Freemasons in Ireland, while at the same time providing much-needed funds for such worthy causes".

The concert was the latest in a long series of fund-raising projects by Irish Freemasons for non-Masonic charities.

In the past 15 years more than £1m has been donated to medical research throughout Ireland
